Daily Report Day 1
After weeks of planning, the first day of the W.A. Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence Bike Ride was under way.
The picturesque town of Northam, situated on the Avon River, each year plays host to the Avon Descent, a high speed boat race along the river to its final destination in Perth. And although Northam once again was the host, it was the members of the bike relay that were its guests.
An enthusiastic gathering of students at the school were seated under cover waiting for the opening ceremony. Finally, the riders appeared through the centre aisle of pupils and the murmuring, pointing and excited whispering began.
After the usual introductions, we were into our presentation. They listened most attentively and asked many important questions. A Northam councilor gave us inspiring words to charge us up for the start of our 1000km journey and after we sang our theme song and presented the certificates, the riders stepped on their pedals and the first revolutions of their cranks marked the beginning of this marvelous event.
Having to complete 220km today, we split into 3 teams, with each team needing to complete about 75km. Often riding in tandem, the distance seemed to blur past and before we knew it, the afternoon was upon us and we were speaking to another 2 schools!
To see the smiling, happy faces of the students enamours us with such renewed strength and capacity to continue.
Each day will be an every-increasing opportunity to share with the community, a small portion of inspiration and hope for a brighter and better future.
Amidst the challenges of the daily itinerary, there were also the associated challenges with the support vehicles. One car needed thermostat attention whist another ran out of fuel. Needless to say (though I shall) the latter will be attended to on a more regular basis!
With all of these things taken care of, we are looking forward to another day in the life of the ride tomorrow.
