Congratulations to all the runners who braved the elements this morning at the Sri Chinmoy 10km & 4 km Fun-Runs. The cold, the wind and the rain saw a slimmed-down field take to the Lake Burley Griffin cycle path. Thankfully the rain stopped for (most) of the duration!

Most runners came back muddy and feeling they left it all out there on the course. Many expressed how hard they found the run... which (hopefully) means they had a good race!

Will Brady was the fastest in the 4km with a time of 16:27. Kim Wilmshurst was first female and second finisher overall in 16:39. Race stalwart Spencer Burns was first in his category in 16:51.

In the 10km David Handwicke was first across the line in 37:41, followed by Charles Nicoll in 39:52 and Jeff Grey in 39:57 (first in the mens' 50-59 age category.)

For the women the champion was Michelle Burns in 45:22, followed by Claudia Brown (46:37) and Melissa Oloyede (46:53).

Special mention goes to our Over 70 age group winners; Caroline Campbell (1:04:58), and Graham Burke (54:24).

Unfortunately the race director spent two crucial hours bogged near the race turnaround with the pancake batter on board. By the time he got towed out, the race awards were well underway. The barbeque was set up and cooking in record time, though.

To those who stuck around, thank you for your patience. And to anyone who had to leave before the pancakes, please drop in to My Rainbow-Dreams cafe sometime in Dickson and allow us to treat you to something off our menu, complimentary.

Canberra Day is a festive occasion, a celebration of Canberra’s birthday and all that we love about our home city. One thing we love most is the abundance of opportunities for running and recreation. The bi-annual Sri Chinmoy 10km & 4km Fun-Runs make use of a recreational path alongside Lake Burley Griffin which is geographically in the heart of Canberra, and yet from which, apart from the vista at the start/finish area, one will see scarcely a single building.

Balloons ascended to festoon the sky in anticipation of the start of the race, as though to gain the best viewing spots to observe the contests.

Joshua Torley ran a spirited race from the front in the 10km, recording the fastest time in many a year of 32:11. Craig Benson (33:24) and James Minto (34:52) rounded out the top 3 men. David Clarke took out the Male 50-59 in 40:20; Timothy Horton the Male 60-69 with 51:44; and Peter Gentry the Male 70 and Over with 1:02:32.

Another of the all-star Torley clan – 10-year-old Stephanie –  ran an amazing 40:15 to win the women’s race outright, from Narelle Desmet (42:41) and Michelle Burns (43:42). Elizabeth Bennett was fastest of the Female 50-59 in 48:23; and Jennifer Kellett stood first among the Female 60-69 with 55:46.

The 4km race was marred by a marshalling oversight, which saw a dozen runners missing the turnaround point and running extra distance: 3 boys even proceeded to continue on to complete the full 10km course: their adjusted times are included in the 10km results, though with new numbers. The organisers apologise unreservedly for this mistake: all who ran an extra distance are invited to please participate again with a complimentary entry in the next Sri Chinmoy race at this venue in October.

Ryan Cuzner (Boys Under 13) returned to the finish the fastest in 18:24, just ahead of his dad Matt in 18:28; Callum Burns took out the Boys Under 17 with 21:12. Kim Wilmshurst meanwhile came first in the Female 17 and Over category in 18:40, with Laura Burns (Girls Under 13) not far behind in 18:56; Josephine Dendrinos took out the Girls Under 17 in 23:58.

Congratulations to all who participated on this pleasant, though somewhat humid morning. You are champions all!
