9 March, 2009- Closed to swimming for over a month, Lake Burley Griffin nevertheless remains an idyllic backdrop for a morning run.
The annual Sri Chinmoy Canberra Day 10 km & 4 km Fun-Runs were staged in ideal running conditions- overcast with little breeze and soothing views over a serene lake. A friendly group of 134 runners and walkers made the most of the beautiful morning, the course, each other's company, and a hearty pancake breakfast before parting ways to enjoy the remainder of this public holiday.
Up-and-coming star, Shane Farrant, easily won the 4 km race outright in 14:16, racing in the Under 17 Boys division, from Hayden Armstrong (M17+) in 15:02, while third placing went to Under 13 Boys winner, Joshua Torley, returning the excellent time of 15:26.
While Joshua's placing was outstanding, his sister Nicola outdid him by winning the women's race outright in 16:04, from the Girl's Under 13 division! Second place Girl Under 13, Olivia Fogarty, also came in ahead of the entire field of Women 17+, who were headed in by Karina West in 18:18.
