  • Sri Chinmoy Como Landing Race Report 2009

    By Veeraja Uppal
    5 July

Congratulations to all who braved the 4 seasons in one day weather, to toe the start line for the Sri Chinmoy Como Landing Half Marathon last Sunday.

While numbers were slightly down on last year, possibly due to looming rain clouds, the times were fast, with many course records broken on this grey Melbourne morning.

Full results and photos from the day are now available online.

The half marathon was the feature event of the morning's program and we are pleased to announce that both our male and female winners set new course records for their efforts. The men's event was convincingly won by John Dutton in 1:15:19 and Sam Parker took out the women's event in 1.33.38, just ahead of Nikki Macfarlane, who ran a swift 1.33.48 to take first in the women's 40-49 category.

However the outstanding performance of the day must surely go to Frank Furlan, aged 70, who completed the 21.1 km distance in 1.58.49, bravely defying his advancing age. Well done Frank, you are an inspiration!

The course records continued to tumble in the 14km event too with Deanne Brennan taking line honours in the women's race in a very swift 59:53, eclipsing the previous course record by a massive 2:20, and coming home 12th overall. Congratulations Deanne. The men's even was taken out by Luke Grey in 51:14, who finished almost 3 minutes clear of all contenders.

The 7km race was won by Trevor Kelly in 26:05 with April Grenfell taking the women's prize in 30:25. Trevor's win is all the more remarkable considering he also finished first in the men's 50-59 age category thus finishing ahead of many runners half his age. Well done Trevor.

For those of you looking for a good long preparation race to test you out for the Melbourne Marathon or Half Marathon the Sri Chinmoy Princes Park 30K just over 2 weeks away on Sunday July 26, might be just what you need. The event features 30km, 21.1km, 10km and 5km distances and is run on a flat 5km loop at Princes Park. Enter online.

As the warmer weather approaches there is also the Sri Chinmoy Yarra Boulevard Half Marathon on Sunday September 13 offering the standard trio of distances; 21.1, 10 and 5km. Enter online.

We look forward to seeing at one of our upcoming events soon.

    Transcendence is perfection.
    Perfection is transcendence.
    When we transcend our capacities,
Immediately we get an inner thrill,
Which is another name for perfection.
No perfection can ever be achieved
    Without self-transcendence.
