Sri Chinmoy Canberra Day 10 km & 4 km Race Report

9 March, 2009- Closed to swimming for over a month, Lake Burley Griffin nevertheless remains an idyllic backdrop for a morning run.

The annual Sri Chinmoy Canberra Day 10 km & 4 km Fun-Runs were staged in ideal running conditions-  overcast with little breeze and soothing views over a serene lake. A friendly group of 134 runners and walkers made the most of the beautiful morning, the course, each other's company, and a hearty pancake breakfast before parting ways to enjoy the remainder of this public holiday.

Up-and-coming star, Shane Farrant, easily won the 4 km race outright in 14:16, racing in the Under 17 Boys division, from Hayden Armstrong (M17+) in 15:02, while third placing went to Under 13 Boys winner, Joshua Torley, returning the excellent time of 15:26.

While Joshua's placing was outstanding, his sister Nicola outdid him by winning the women's race outright in 16:04, from the Girl's Under 13 division! Second place Girl Under 13, Olivia Fogarty, also came in ahead of the entire field of Women 17+, who were headed in by Karina West in 18:18.

Alex Miller led home the field in the 10 km race over the rather hilly course, crossing the line in 38:01. Martin Woods (43:21) just edged out Paul Archer in the Men 50-59 division, while Geoff Barker (53:39) continued his run of trophies in the Men 60-69 division.

Meanwhile Emily Lamrock was a clear winner in the women's race in 41:47. The ageless Caroline Campbell, participating the Women 60-69 division, bettered two thirds of the women's field with her 54:23.

Full results by category and a photo album from the finish line are now published.

Sri Chinmoy Canberra Day 10 & 4km Fun-Run Race Report

10 March 2008

If the passengers in the "EU" hot-air balloon were angling for a bird's-eye view of the Sri Chinmoy Canberra Day 10 km & 4 km Fun-Runs, they timed their run a little early, as their balloon sailed down to land right on the course about an hour before the race was due to start.

Continuing a multi-year trend of glorious weather for this race, a good-sized field assembled of 85 runners for the 10 km and 68 for the 4 km run/walk. This is by far the largest field ever gathered for the 4 km race, and also the highest ratio yet of 4 km to 10 km entrants. The morning cool had just about dissipated by the time runners embarked on their scenic lakeside journey.

"Runner of the Day" award goes to Jim White (top left). While Jim "only" took 3rd place in his age category, this was his third race in three days - on Saturday he completed his first "6-foot Track" ultramarathon in the Blue Mountains; on Sunday he raced the Weston Creek Half-Marathon; then this 10 km race on Monday! Congratulations Jim for an outstanding effort, you are an inspiration to us all!

Scott Imhoff (bottom left) is an oft-times winner of the Sri Chinmoy 10 km race and notched another victory in an impressive 35:02 on this testing course. Anthony Olliffe took out the competitive men's 50-59 division in 43:27, while Bob Chapman lithely covered the course in 51:53 for first over-70s male.

First woman home was Kate Molineaux in 44:39, a full 4 minutes ahead of her chasers. Kaaren Sutcliffe, another veteran of the course took line honours in her new category Women 50-59 in an impressive 53:32.

Meanwhile the 4 km race, as so often happens, was a stage for younger runners to shine. Shane Farrant was first home in a sprightly 15:02, though running in the Under 17 Boys category, with Dave Cooper in the Male 17+ only 12 seconds adrift, just ahead of Daniel Craig. Joshua Torley was first Under 13 boy home in 16:30.

Nicola Torley (right), in the Girls Under 13, was not far behind the leading males in 15:45, an outstanding run. Kym Chisholm announced her comeback by taking first place Female 17+ in 16:46, while Georgia Hardy was first in the Girls Under 17 in 18:30.

Full age category results are now published.

Sri Chinmoy Labour Day 10 & 4 km Fun Run 2007 Race Report

The Sri Chinmoy Labour Day 10km/4km Race has continued to grow with each successive year, but organisers were astounded by today's field: 276 runners registered, far and away the largest group of runners to eagerly arrive at the Acton Ferry Terminal for the race since it began over 20 years ago.

As there were so many runners, it took an extra long time simply to register them all, meaning that the races began 35 minutes late- which is, erm, ANOTHER race record. Apologies to all runners for this untimely delay- especially those who found themselves running late for other appointments.

Another apology: Alf, our usual photographer, was in Adelaide visiting his family for the long weekend. This means that the photo gallery is smaller (and sad to say, less accomplished) than usual, as the only photos were taken by some of the other, less image-savvy officials, in the midst of juggling other duties (and without the super-deluxe camera that Alf has in his possession).

Official business aside, it was an almost perfect day for a run: fine, sunny, with just the matter of a stiff breeze to contend with. Alex Matthews (left) easily won the 10km fun run and set a new course record with an impressive time of 32:38, followed by Scott Imhoff (36:17) and Grant Stanfield (36:35). Emily Brichacek was the first woman home in 37:45, followed by Natalie Wood (40:53) and Emily's sister, Jenny (41:38).

In the 4km fun run, Robert Torley- not for the first time- was the first one across the line, in a time of 14:41. Unlike previous years, however, 18-year-old Robert won the open male division, rather than the under-17s division of previous races. He was followed close behind by veteran runner Geoff Monro (14:51) and Shane Farrant (15:27), who now picked up the under-17 prize that had so often gone to Robert. Daniel Hearle (16:25) was the top under-13 competitor, followed by Robert's brother Joshua Torley(16:54).

The women's 4km race was equally exciting, with Hannah Angove (15:33) winning overall- and taking home the under-17 medal. Hayley Gosman (16:05), another veteran of our kids' races, now entered as an 18-year-old- and was the fastest runner in the open female category. She was followed by another under-17 runner, Anna Brichacek (16:07), and Sara Hely (16:28). The first under-13 girl was Nicola Torley, yet another from the amazing Torley clan, in a time of 16:36.

Whatever unpredictable changes occur, it looks like we can still depend on the Torleys to dominate the 4km race. (The patriarch, Paul Torley, was also in the race- achieving a time of 16:38.)

Sri Chinmoy Canberra 10km/4km Fun Run Race Report 25 March 2007

The sun was out, but the cold wind proved that- despite the hot weather of the past week- Canberra might not be having an extended summer after all.

Still, nearly 100 people braved the breeze, inspired by one of the runs (or perhaps the post-race pancake breakfast). Nathan Crowley (left) won the 10km race in a time of 36:57, followed by Curtis Bailey in 37:10. The first woman home was Kym Chisholm in 45:15, then Rebecca Wiasak in 46:10.

The 4km race was dominated (not for the first time) by teenaged boys. Though the more grown-up Paul Torley was first across the line in 15:28, the next four places were taken by boys 17 year old and under: Shane Farrant (16:16), Matthew Kelly, Joshua Torley and Michael Howes. Michael was one of four brothers (all under 13) who finished the race, with their father Stephen also running to provide moral support.

Of the females, Kayler Torley (right), who has long excelled in the under-17 category, proved that age has not wearied her, coming first in the open category (19:27)- and equal first overall, alongside under-13 superstar Breanna Briggs.

Sri Chinmoy Labour Day 10km & 4km Fun-Run Race Report

On a perfect Canberra summer's day- no mean achievement, as it was early October- the ever-popular 10 km / 4 km fun-run event boasted its largest field since it was first held in 1984.

start.jpgThe record field of 176 finishers braved the challenging lakeside course at Acton Ferry Terminal, and was rewarded by not only a sense of personal satisfaction and achievement, but also a breakfast of crepes (with fresh maple syrup), fruits and assorted cereals.

How does a runner stand out in such a large group? Well, it helps if your name is Scott. Scott Imhoff (below) easily won the 10 km race in 35:26, followed by Scott Irons (38:21). Two of our long-standing regulars, Geoff Monro (39:10) and Bruce Egan (39:22), came third and fourth.

The top female was Kristen Connell (41:34), followed by Kym Chisholm (44:16), Christina Thorne (44:56) and Reegan O'Keefe (45:36).

scott_catriona.jpgIn the 4 km run, Chris Macdonald (13:15) clocked the fastest time on this tough course for several years, followed by Keith Southgate (14:02), Paul Considine (14:30) and Robert Torley (15:02). The fastest females were Catriona Windsor, 12 (far right), and Nicola Torley, nine, who finished in 16:23 and 16:29 respectively. (Both are already veterans of Sri Chinmoy events, and we can safely name them as"ones to watch" for the future.) As Catriona and Nicola are both under 13, Marissa Veid (16:45) clinched the women's first-place trophy, followed by Karina West (19:36).

Special mention should be made of Rylan Ziesing, easily our youngest-ever 4 km finisher. Ryan turns five later this month, so if anyone is inspired to break his course record, they will have to be no older than four years, eleven months, one week and one day old!

Full race results by category are published.   Please also view the finish line action in the event photo gallery.

Sri Chinmoy 10km & 4km Fun Run Report- 7 May 2006

A perfect morning for a run. Sunny Canberra weather, with the temperature rising to its ideal heights only minutes before the races began. The sunshine was replaced by strong wind, light rain and a temperature drop, right on cue: the moment everyone had gone home!

As a result, many commented on the fine weather as they ran over the tried-and-true course.

Geoff Monro (left), a long-time veteran of Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team events, won in 37:59, followed by another familiar face, Michael Corlis, in 38:18. Tim Mayfield (38:40) and Bruce Norton (39:20) came next.

Of the women, Melinda Cockshutt (below, right) won comfortably in 42:20, but Thea Zimpel, in second place with 44:05, trimmed three minutes off her personal best time. With such self-transcendence, we look forward to the rematch! Kym Chisholm (45:35) was third.

A special bow to Sue Archer, who won the women's 50-59 section- and was fourth woman overall.

The 4km race seemed to belong to the tremendous Torley family, with members of that family winning three of the six categories and placing second in another. Robert Torley (14:18), racing in the open category, was the first runner to finish, followed by Peter Zygadlo (14:26) and. Paul Torley (15:33)!

In a truly outstanding performance, the first female home was Catriona Windsor in 16:41 (left)- and she was racing in the under-13 age group! Second, also in that group, was Nicola Torley (17:08). Both girls were way ahead of their nearest rivals among the females, of any age group.

Sri Chinmoy Labour Day Fun-Run Race Report 2005

At the risk of spoiling the reader's enjoyment by opening with an awful pun, it was certainly a fair-weather day for racing in Canberra.

The October 3 Labour Day public holiday Monday dawned under an exultant canopy of blue.   Like so many flowers, buds and shoots eager for the embrace of such a splendiferous Spring morn, a record field of fun- and fitness-seekers thronged to the lake's edge and spilled into a polite pile-up at the registration table.

Following a moment's pause which only brightened the lake's shimmer and deepened the sky's azure, 135 runners set off to complete either a 10 km or 4 km course on the cycle path skirting the bank of Lake Burley Griffin.

The day's shining performance came from Jackie Fairweather (née Gallagher), who in setting a new women's course record (of 36:29) also came in first outright, ahead of all the men in the 10 km race.   Jackie is a former world triathlon and duathlon champion, has won a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in the marathon, and is now triathlon coach at the AIS.   Today she presented a master class for all as she strode to a consummate victory. Second place was Kristin Connell in 41:52, and third was Jo Allison in 43:08.

Fastest male was Rob Little, in a time of 37:24, who came in just ahead of Rob Imhoff and Michael Corlis, who finished in 38:07 and 38:36 respectively.

The 4 km race offered a showcase for the talents of the Torley family, who will be needing a new annex at home for trophies augmented today by a further 5 prizes across all age groups.   Leading the charge was number one son Robert, taking line honours in a tick over 14 minutes and 20 seconds.   Paul Considine finished hot on his heels in 14:28, with Geoff Monro a close third in 14:42.

Fastest female 4 km runner was Catriona Windsor in 17:09, in the Under 13 age category. Next fastest, and winner of the Over 17 category, was Miriam McCarthy, in 17:38. Kayler Torley, winner of the Under 17 category, was third fastest female in 18:11.

The runners lingered at the finish area after the race, enjoying the fine weather and the delicious fresh pancakes cooked up by Bernice. We'd like to thank all the runners who attended, and look forward to seeing you at our races in the future.

Sri Chinmoy Mother's Day Race Report 2005

By Prachar Stegemann
8 September

In perfect weather, a devoted group of runners visited the Acton Ferry Terminal, on the north shore of Lake Burley Griffin, for a 20-year tradition: the Mother's Day 10km Run. Some of the runners have been doing the race almost since day one, but everyone- young and old- joined in the fun with enthusiasm. Stuart Doyle won the 10 km race in a time of 36:23, followed by Mick Corlis (37:24) and Paul Considine (37:32). The first woman across the line was Kym Chisholm in 47:04, followed by Michelle Elmitt (47:41) and Carolyn Kramer (47:53).

Special mention should go to Joan Mallory. At 73, she is our oldest female runner for some time- and she finished in an impressive 1:14:49.

The family of the 4 km race was the Torleys. Seventeen-year-old Robert Torley won the race overall in a time of 14:05. His sister Kayler, 15, was also the first female home in 17:48. Meanwhile, their father Paul, younger brothers Michael and Joshua, and younger sister Nicola, ALL won trophies in their age groups (in Paul's case, the over-17s category). To coin a phrase, the family that runs together, has fun together!

Self-Transcendence Labour Day 2004 10 km & 4 km Fun-Run Race Report

By Prachar Stegemann
8 September

The Self-Transcendence 10 km & 4 km Fun Run is one of the most well-established events of Canberra's racing calendar. While other events held by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team (such as the Self-Transcendence Triathlon Festival) move through much of Canberra and attract thousands of competitors, the Fun Run has always been a smaller, more intimate race.

That intimacy, much-loved by the running community, looks set to continue- even though the Labour Day Fun Run on October 4 attracted the largest field in the event's history. A total of 162 runners completed the 10 km or 4 km races, enjoying the scenic courses along the north edge of Lake Burley Griffin. Many praised the scenery, admired the perfect spring weather, or waxed lyrical about the free hot breakfast after the race.

In the 10 km race, repeat winner Ben Wisbey added another first-place trophy to his cabinet with a time of 37:06, followed close behind by Andrew Adams (37:10) and Luke O'Neil (37:12). Serena Lewis was the fastest woman, with a time of 44:34, followed by Bronwyn Adams (44:48) and Kerrie Wright (45:31).

The 4 km race was won by Peter Boyle in 14:04, followed by Robert Torley (14:31) and Glen McCarthy (15:37). Lea Edwards (18:16) won the adult females category, with Demelza Corisha (18:42) and Lisa Normandeau (18:59) not far behind.

Mitchell Rennharn (17:14) was the highest-placed under-13 males, and Samantha Bradley (19:09) the highest-placed under-13 female. Of the athletes aged under-17, Kayler Torley took the honours with 17:43.
