In the teeth of what can only be described as a howling gale, a small, brave troupe gritted, grunted and ground their way around Yerrabi Pond and through Mulligans Flat and Goorooyarroo Nature Reserves. That so many even turned up on such a morning revealed a dauntless spirit not about to be ruffled by mere bluster.

Long and Short course races started concurrently, in opposite directions.

Rowan Beggs-French defied the elements to post one of the most impressive victories on this course, just missing the elusive 2 hour mark with 2:00:34 – an amazing time in the circumstances and 21 minutes ahead of 2nd-placed Steve Hanley (2:21:49). Most impressive about Rowan’s race was that he appeared calm and effortless even in the face of the raging wind. Jon Schol took out the Men 50+, not far behind Steve with 2:22:23 after a tight battle with Steve’s biking skills probably the deciding factor.

Similarly, Clare Lonergan and Danielle Winslow had a tremendous tussle in the women’s race, with Danielle opening up a substantial lead in the paddle leg, only for Clare to catch up again on the bike. Heading out of the final transition close together, it was Clare who ran more strongly to take the race in 2:36:24.

Fastest team on the day was the duo of “Madge & Co” – Erica Collins and Grant Madge – in 2:35:11.

Kerry Baxter (Male 50+) from Goulburn took line honours in the Short Course, leading from the start. Though overtaken in the paddle leg by Craig Hancock (1st Male Under 50), Kerry reclaimed his lead on the mountain bike and never looked back to win in 1:25:56.

Sharon Clarke was first Female Under 50 home in 1:37:22, with Pauline English taking the Female 50+ category in 2:07:37.

While congratulations go to all who raced today, special thanks also to the helpers and officials who stood for hours in the freezing breeze: Philip Livingstone and Fiona McWhinnie, the TACT Technical Officials and Lauren Markland from Sports Medicine Australia, Carinna Tong and a dozen volunteers from the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team.

Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi/Mullians Flat Multi-Sport Race Report

Sri-Chinmoy-Yerrabi-Mullians-Flat-Multi-Sport-race.jpg

The day was hiding as the competitors slowly made their way to registration at Yerrabi Pond District Park this morning, with a light fog over parts of Canberra and cloud covering the rest.

Everyone was rugged up waiting for the start, which saw both the long and short course competitors starting together – sprinting off in different directions on the start command.

As the competitors made their way back into transition after their first run leg, the clouds had parted to give way to perfect conditions for all.

Rowan Beggs-French was leading the Long Course at this stage but gave up the lead on the paddle leg – a discipline he is a new at -  just keeping in contact with the main group, with Jon Schol in the Male 50+ taking the lead after the paddle in an impressive 31:42.

With Rowan back on dry land he headed out on the bike and took our mountain bike course in his stride.  Flying into transition with a comfortable lead, he maintained his pace to win in a rare sub-2-hour time of 1.58.23.  Second and third were close with only 10 seconds between them; with Ben Rattray running the fastest final leg of all competitors to come within 10 seconds of 2nd   place getter Seb Dunne (2.04.43) giving Ben a time of  2.04.53 to take third.

The women's race was won by Danielle Winslow in 2.27.03.  Danielle claimed the lead in the paddle section and did not give it up for the rest of the race.   She arrived early to pick up her number with a beautiful baby in the pram.  Her husband Gary Rolfe was competing in the long course teams event and was able to run with the cute little tot (safely in the pram) on the final leg so that both parents (and baby) could compete in this event.   Heather Gow-Carey was second in 2.32.38 shaving a few minutes off Danielle’s lead in the final run section.  Third went to Caroline Christenson in 2.53.06.

The short course event was won comfortably by Bill Hick – Male 50+.  This 66-years-young power house was only seconds behind the leader in the first run leg and then took the lead in the paddle and extended it on the bike coming in to finish in 1.24.39 as the overall winner (both individuals and teams) and winner of Male 50+.  Not one to let the  dust settle he had competed in the 5km Sri Chinmoy Royal National Park Trail Run the weekend before (having just completed a 1500 km cycle along the Murray River) and was already asking about our next race in Sydney.  Scott Birdsall took out second in Male 50+, and second overall, in 1.34.48.

Male under 50 went to Brendan Read in 1.43.45, with 2nd going to James Fletcher in 1.50.36.

Vanessa Bleakly took out the woman's short course in 1.38.25 and Pauline English won the women's 50+ category in 1.58.05.

The teams event went to team Kaos!  Ella Cuthbert took the lead in the run and each of the team members after that extended it, with Ella coming home with a sprint finish in 1.30.13.  Well done to Team Kaos!

Second placed team went to a combo of Jessica Clissold and Sarah Heins in 1.50.26 and third to first time competitors and 3 mothers 'treating' themselves on Mothers Day in 1.52.26: if you didn't know they were mothers before the event you knew by the end with all the children cheering on the team as Caitlin Halliday came into the finish.

With the sun still shining and the competition over, all enjoyed a relaxed time near the lake enjoying their post race pancakes.  Chef Rathin even had gluten-free and vegan options on hand so every competitor could savour some delicious pancakes.  A big thanks to Steven Hanley - 5th place getter in the long course and vegan who supplied us with his Vegan Pancake recipe!

Sadly, this will be the last time this event will be staged due to the mountain bike course no longer being available for events.  We will always be on the lookout for new venues for our multi-sport races, so if you find a good option with a nice transition area and exciting run, paddle and mountain bike possibilities, please let us know!

Full results from both the Long Course and Short Course races are published, along with two photo albums from around the course.  Enjoy!

Strong, buffeting winds – seeming as though direct from Antarctica – made it tough going for competitors on all legs today. Congratulations to all who braved the elements, and triumphed in such trying conditions!

A dominant bike leg was the foundation of a commanding win from defending Long Course champion David Simpfendorfer, finishing in an impressive 2:08:27. An enthralling tussle between Lee Rice and Ryan Dixon for the other podium places saw Lee's lead from the 1st run and paddle legs eroded by Ryan on the bike, only for Lee to power home in the final run. Meanwhile, the ever-popular Gary Rolfe's hopes of a "pointy end" finish were stymied by a pot-hole which saw him catapulted from his bike into a signpost, breaking a collar bone and shoulder in the process. Our sincere thanks to all who assisted Gary including several members of the public and the ambulance officers who attended the scene. The organisers and all competitors wish Gary a smooth and speedy recovery.

Veteran Yerrabi contestant Peter Macartney claimed the main prize in the Male 50+ division in 2:25:14 from Mark Varvazovsky; while partner Sue Donoghoe took out the women's race in 2:59:42 from Bronwyn Kenyon. "Burns Bilbys" (Callum, Michelle and Tim Burns) were a little too strong for the "Sweeney Duo" in the Mixed Teams, despite a scorching final run from Gerard Sweeney of 15:03.

Right up there with the men in the Short Course race were Jessica Robson (1:30:38) and Justine Kennedy (1:32:13). With an identical bike split, the difference between the two was not apparent until the final run wen Jessica drew away. Pauline English took out the Women 50+ in a cheerful effort of 2:09:39.

Terry Mulcahy led from the front in the Short Course race, and despite being caught in the paddle leg by good friend Ben Newman, once onto the bike the result was never in doubt, despite Terry running the full Long Course 2nd run leg. He finished in 1:27:42 from Ben's 1:30:19. In between these two, the Men's 50+ category saw one of the day's closest battles with Kim Houghton (1:29:47) just edging out Sydneysider Bill Hick (1:30:11).

The Mixed Teams saw "S & S" (Suzanna Grgic and Simon Bond, 1:35:22) coming in ahead of "Piggy in the Middle", which paired Peter Milekovich with wife Lucy, while daughters Vikvi and Megan both completed the course solo and other daughter Belinda teamed up with her mum – a sterling family effort after driving down from Sydney in the early hours. "Mums in Action" (Rebecca Perry and Amy Osborn) took out the All-Female teams in 1:43:21.

Full results are published by category and overall, along with a photo album from the morning.

"Night's candles are burnt out and jocund day
Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain-top…"

Shakespeare might have been describing today's dawn, jocund day tiptoeing in over the faraway silhouettes of Canberra's many hills and flanking mountains, and yes, a little mist before sun-up and the 10 am kick-off to the Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi/Mulligans Flat Multi-Sport race.Around 50 of us line up for the Long Course or Short Course options of this multi-sport event – a run leg, a kayak section on Yerrabi Pond and a mountain bike foray in the eucalyptus parklands that sprawl around this city of hills and vistas – then a final lap of Yerrabi Pond before the finish line. Then pancakes, melon, food galore courtesy of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team and their generous hearts.

This is a wonderful event and my own first foray – an untrained one – into the challenging world of multi-sport racing. How wonderful the camaraderie of the participants and the enjoyment of a weekend race that encompasses so much of Canberra's natural beauty. I arrived in Canberra the day before from Auckland to offer some week-long meditation classes and was encouraged to participate in the race after a fusillade of flattery from my Canberra friend and race director, Prachar. A kayak materialised from the garage and was dusted off, a bike presented, and I was signed up! But what an exhilarating event and a perfect start to my visit – especially that high-velocity bike ride along the gravel roads and tracks of Mulligans Flat, charging through the gum trees and orange hills at breakneck speed. Lines from Banjo Patterson's "Mulga Bill's Bicycle" a refrain in my mind.

Heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful team of organisers and the encouraging and welcoming hearts of my fellow competitors. I will definitely be back to participate in the Long Course option next year – trained and ready to go! – Jogyata Dallas, Short Course competitor #602

Sunday 9 May, 2010: Early in the morning as we hoisted the Registration banner, Yerrabi Pond was covered in mist. Competitors appeared, one by one, kayaks and mountain bikes in tow.

By 8.00am the haze lifted to reveal a clear blue sky – presenting perfect conditions as always for this annual event.

With bikes hinged on the racks, and kayaks cooling their noses in the water, everyone was called to the start for a briefing. Two courses: one short, one long. Both races starting at the same time, 10am, on the same line, but heading in opposite directions. Back to back, like an 18th century duel, the competitors strained for the signal – GO – and they were off on the first leg – the first Run.

paddle.jpg

All transitions took place at the START/FINISH area. The first lone runner appeared from the winding cycle path that circumnavigates the lake, swiftly donned his life vest, launched his kayak, and paddled off towards the bright orange buoy. Team members by the beach waited to be tagged, paddle in hand, eager to be seaborne. As more and more runners completed their discipline, a fleet of kayaks and skis could be seen gliding to and fro, across the gleaming surface of Yerrabi Pond.

At first the conditions were perfect – but a stiff breeze soon developed and challenged the paddlers at the bottom end of the field. One unfortunate paddler tipped his kayak on the approach to the shore and had to swim the final 30 metres dragging his vessel behind him. By this time the lead cyclists were hurtling through Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve, scattering kangaroos in their wake.

mtbiker.jpg

The bike course is a truly sumptuous affair, with long stretches of relatively flat trails through scenic bushland. Bikers can scramble as fast as their legs will allow them, only occasionally having to dismount for a gate, or a perimeter fence.

The final transition sees the bikers screeching into the bike compound and before you can say “Yerrabi” they have released a teammate or are off themselves for the final run around the lake.

red-top_0.jpgsteve.jpg

All finishers reached the line in bright sunlight, to a cheer from their teammates and fellow competitors. It was remarkable to see entrants of all ages, shapes and sizes - several people accepting the challenge for the first time. It is a race for everybody, regardless of capacity and experience. And to top it off, the post race pancakes are a welcome treat!

Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi/Mulligan's Flat Race Report

3 May, 2009- Complications with the mountain bike course, ensuing from Gungahlin's rapid urban expansion, have ensured that this year's Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport Yerrabi/Mulligans Flat has quite possibly been the final edition of this boutique event.

Like every other year, conditions were cool but gloriously sunny throughout, making for a smooth event, fast times and happy athletes. The largest field ever assembled-  42 starters-  gathered for either the long or the short course combining running, paddling and mountain biking.

Exactly half of the overall field were solo male entrants in the long course event. Steven Hanley (right) proved his overall class in this race, finishing in 2:08:26 on the back of an outstanding mountain bike leg, despite becoming lost for several minutes on his return from Mulligans Flat. Despite being chased by quality athletes of the calibre of Gerard Sweeney, Brad Dickie and Al Boyle, Steven's break after the bike was simply too large to eclipse.

Local triathlete Sarah Fien showed her strength across all disciplines, taking out the women's long race in 2:22:49, mixing it with the leading men throughout. Colin Vest and Peter Fogarty meanwhile had an absorbing battle for honours in the Men Over 50 division, Peter's superior running not quite enough to reel in Colin's advantage in the paddle and bike, Colin finishing in 2:20:10.

Leading teams in the long course race were "Ti2Chicks" (All-Female), "Farrer Friends" (All-Male) and "Crisis 95" (Mixed).

Judd Boeker (1:24:51) and Ana Duncan (1:31:04) took out the men's and women's under 50 divisions in the short race, with Tim Yapp leading home the Men Over 50 in 1:32:50. Winning teams were "Living in the Moment" (All-Female), "Father and Sons" (All-Male, pictured), "Crazy Anzacs" (Mixed) and "Hacketeers" (Mixed all 50+).

Congratulations to all participants, and thanks to all who have contributed to making this such an enjoyable event during its 5-year history.

Full results by category, including split times and positions for all legs are now published, along with a photo album from the start/finish area.

Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi Multi-Sport Race Report 4 May 2008

Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi Multi-Sport Race Report 4 May 2008

A chilly morning soon surrendered to a sky full of sun and infinite blue.

The Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi/Muligans Flat Multi-Sport is traditionally a quite intimate, almost family affair and this year continued the trend, with 38 entrants toeing the starting line.

The Long Course athletes headed south while the Short Course entrants started off to the north for the first run around the serene Yerrabi Pond. This short run was prelude to a paddle - one lap of 2.5 kms for the Short Course and 2 laps for the Long. The pond was picture-perfect, but rather too cool for a swim, as one or two paddlers discovered when their craft turned bottom-up!

Paddle craft were exchanged for mountain bikes â € “ after another half-loop of the pond, riders headed into the woodlands of Mulligans Flat and Goorooyarroo Nature Reserves. This ride is mostly flat and not too technical, an ideal course for either a good fast hit-out or nice easy Sunday ride. The race concluded as it began, with one last turn around the pond on foot.

Mark McDonald was a convincing winner in the Long Course Solo event, with the fastest time for most of the individual disciplines. Meanwhile Peter Fogarty notched 4th fastest time overall to take out the Men Over 50s division. The one disappointment of the race was the absence of any female entrants in the Solo Long Course.

In the Short Course Solo Male division, Gordon Mitchell (racing in the Over 50s) came even closer to the outright win, finishing only 25 seconds behind first place Al Boyle from Wollongong. Carmen Jeffery placed 6th outright with her clear win in the Solo Women's Short Course race.

Meanwhile the team "Mother and Sons" defended their crown from last year to take home the Mixed Team category (Short Course).

Full results by category are published.

The next race in the Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport series is the Sri Chinmoy Off-Road Duathlon on Sunday 6 July at Black Mountain Reserve.

Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport Yerrabi/Mulligans Flat Race Report 07

Running, paddling and riding through the bush was a perfect option for this glorious Autumn morning, with a mild tan the only threat posed by the elements.

Yerrabi Pond District Park is ideally situated in Canberra's urban fringe of Gungahlin, adjoining the bushland reserves of Mulligan's Flat and Gooroooyarroo, offering an off-road race venue close to home and nearby to city amenities. The cycle path around the pond is flat, scenic and ideal for running.

The persistent drought has reduced the reservoir, entailing a minor amendment to the course, yet the pond was still sufficiently wet for a smooth, serene morning paddle. This was the leg where those with experience and superior form stood to gain the most, as many in the field came from running and biking or triathlon backgrounds, as witnessed by the presence of several hired craft in the on-shore line-up.

The mountain bike course was also adjusted to contend with the embryonic development of the suburb of Forde. The new route added an extra kilometre to both long and short rides, entering Mulligans Flat Reserve through another gate further to the east. Most of the course within the reserve remained the same, though differently configured.

The race of the day was the tussle in the Short Course solo women's competition. Kerry Louttit held a 45 second advantage over Carmen Jeffery after the first run, only for Carmen to take a minute and a half lead out of the water. Kerry made up 30 seconds on the ride and after catching Carmen on the run, a sprint finish provided great drama with only a few centimetres separating the pair at the finish after 1:30:18 of solid gold effort, the pair also beating home all the solo males bar one.

Ian Kennedy continued his good form in local Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport races, taking out the Short Course solo men's race in 1:29:52. First placed Short Course mixed team "Mother & Sons" featured outstanding running from Reuben Caley whose time for the final run was over a minute ahead of the field.

The Long Course solo men's race also featured some good personal duels. Though running the fastest splits for both run legs, Dale McCormack gave up too much on the paddle and bike to Adrian Keogh, whose time of 2:01:32 now stands as a record on today's new course. Meanwhile Stephen Richardson made up sufficient time on the bike to hold off Pete Garbutt, who excelled in the run and paddle legs. Over 50s winner Peter Fogarty placed 7th outright amongst the men with 2:25:04. Sara Hely was untroubled to win the Long Course solo women's race in 2:30:05, despite a strong run home from 2nd placed Keri Vaughan.

Full results of both races are now published >>

The next Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport race is the Sri Chinmoy Off-Road Duathlon in Black Mountain Reserve and the National Botanic Gardens on Sunday 8 July 2007. Online entries are now available.

Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi/Mulligans Flat Multi-Sport Report 2006

Perfect conditions greeted athletes at picturesque Yerrabi District Park: light cloud cover, cool temperatures and a pond that might have been in trance, a portrait of serenity.

The latest race in the Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport Series featured both a long and short-course option. Both races commenced with a run around Yerrabi Pond. All athletes fronted the starting line at once, but the long and short course runners raced off in opposite directions as the long race demanded a complete 4 km lap of the Pond while the shorter event started with a 2.5 km P-shaped survey of the foreshores. Warmed up from the run, the short racers were the first into their paddle craft, pushing off from shore onto the inviting lake for one lap of the 2.5 km rectangular paddle course. The long paddlers followed soon after, completing two circuits of the same. While participants were doubtless striving to the full, the view from shore was surreal as a procession of paddlers glided by in silent cadence.

A few of the long course paddlers demonstrated fine technique to complete their two laps ahead of half of the one-lap field. Swapping paddles for mountain bikes, the next leg took all competitors once more around the lake, then under Horse Park Drive and a little way along Gundaroo Drive before heading into Mulligans Flat, a portion of Canberra Nature Park. The course followed 4-wheel drive maintenance trails through a variety of delightful woodlands with innumerable kangaroos and native birds also enjoying the Sunday morning tranquillity. The short (14 km) riders looped around at the edge of Mulligans Flat, while the long (27 km) riders continued into the more open and elevated reaches of Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve, enjoying sweeping views across the Canberra plain including most of North Canberra to Black Mountain and beyond. Both courses returned racers to the starting point for one final run on cycle paths around the pond, 4 kms for the long and 3 kms for the short course.

The day's stand-out performer was triathlete and multi-sport supremo Jeremy Ross (left) who shattered the standing record for the long race and became the first person to break the 2-hour barrier for the course.
