Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi/Mulligan's Flat Race Report

Sri Chinmoy Yerrabi/Mulligan's Flat Race Report

3 May, 2009- Complications with the mountain bike course, ensuing from Gungahlin's rapid urban expansion, have ensured that this year's Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport Yerrabi/Mulligans Flat has quite possibly been the final edition of this boutique event.

Like every other year, conditions were cool but gloriously sunny throughout, making for a smooth event, fast times and happy athletes. The largest field ever assembled-  42 starters-  gathered for either the long or the short course combining running, paddling and mountain biking.

Exactly half of the overall field were solo male entrants in the long course event. Steven Hanley (right) proved his overall class in this race, finishing in 2:08:26 on the back of an outstanding mountain bike leg, despite becoming lost for several minutes on his return from Mulligans Flat. Despite being chased by quality athletes of the calibre of Gerard Sweeney, Brad Dickie and Al Boyle, Steven's break after the bike was simply too large to eclipse.

Local triathlete Sarah Fien showed her strength across all disciplines, taking out the women's long race in 2:22:49, mixing it with the leading men throughout. Colin Vest and Peter Fogarty meanwhile had an absorbing battle for honours in the Men Over 50 division, Peter's superior running not quite enough to reel in Colin's advantage in the paddle and bike, Colin finishing in 2:20:10.

Leading teams in the long course race were "Ti2Chicks" (All-Female), "Farrer Friends" (All-Male) and "Crisis 95" (Mixed).

Judd Boeker (1:24:51) and Ana Duncan (1:31:04) took out the men's and women's under 50 divisions in the short race, with Tim Yapp leading home the Men Over 50 in 1:32:50. Winning teams were "Living in the Moment" (All-Female), "Father and Sons" (All-Male, pictured), "Crazy Anzacs" (Mixed) and "Hacketeers" (Mixed all 50+).

Congratulations to all participants, and thanks to all who have contributed to making this such an enjoyable event during its 5-year history.

Full results by category, including split times and positions for all legs are now published, along with a photo album from the start/finish area.
