One advantage of using the same course year in, year out, is those who are capable of setting new records, with plenty of experience of the challenges and contours of this course and in good form, can prepare and plan precisely for their record attempts – and with good conditions on race day, all might just fall in place.

On a course which has been used twice a year for 41 years, and witnessed innumerable stellar performances, you don’t expect new records very often – yet this morning, no fewer than THREE records were toppled in the 10km race.

Clare Wall (Female 70 and Over) took advantage of the cancellation of the 6ft track race, to demolish her own best time by over 2 minutes, establishing a new mark of 50:46; while Jennifer Kellett (Female 60-69) was more modest in rearranging her own course PB, lowering it by just 8 seconds to 47:27.

In the Male 60-69, Jeff Grey ran a superbly controlled race in slicing a full minute off the 20-year-old mark of Peter Kallio, to set a new benchmark of 40:26.

Chloe Hanbury was fastest among the women overall with 43:40, from Sharon O’Neill (44:57) and Felicity Hibble (47:23); while Marnie Shaw took home the main F50-59 award with her 46:41.

The men’s 10km race was won by the impressive Kodi Clarkson in 34:28, from Lewis McGuire’s 37:18 and 3rd placed Tom Olson with 38:29; while Ben Crabb was winner of the M50-59 in 38:27, from Andrew Leigh’s 40:56. David Haussmann took out the M70+ with 54:39.

Despite the 4km Fun-Run being won by Ben Steele in 16:05 (1st M17+), the remainder of the field was dominated by the girls and women, with the next 6 placings all going to females – 2nd place outright Julia Murphy in 16:09 (1st F17+) was only metres behind Ben at the finish; while the Ramboer sisters Saleena (17:08) and Samantha (19:06) were 1st and 2nd in the Girls Under 13. Jarrah McKenzie was fastest in the Boys Under 17 with 20:25; Hugo Laue took out the Boys Under 13 in 22:05: and Taylia Laws won the Girls Under 17 with 27:30. Very special mention to Lachlan Lewis, who finished the 4km in 1:03:25.

The next Sri Chinmoy 10km and 4km Fun-Runs will be held on Labour Day, 6th October.

For the 170 brave souls who turned up at what would have been 5:30 am a few days ago, before daylight saving, it turned out to be a beautiful day with smiles all round at the end. The weather was perfect with a gentle breeze and a little bit of that Canberra chill in the air.

A new development is going up just next to the race start so the course had to be changed around a little with a grass section for the first 100 m or so.

In the U13 Category of the 4km race, brothers Liam and Calvin Whitehead got first and second with Liam winning in 22:32. Sisters Saleena and Samantha Ramboer showed their true colours again finishing in smoking hot times of 16:44 and 19:35 respectively. They were incidentally both faster than the boys first and second in the U13s – well done girls!

In the U17s Ben Marshall (19:33) came first in the boys and Matilda McCormack (22:09) came first in the girls race. The male over 17s was won by Jarrett Anthony who also won the overall 4 km race in a time of 14:05 at a pace of 3:31 /km. Female over 17 category was won by Xuan Liu (21:58) who also helped serve pancakes to all the other runners after she finished!

In the 10 km race Greg Taylor finished first in the male Under 50s with a very good time of 35:35 (3:33 /km). In the Male 50-59s Ben Crabb won with 38:45 with our ever-popular Canberra MP, Andrew Leigh, just behind. Jeff Grey ran a very respectable 41:55 to win the male 60-69s and Trevor Jacobs came through in 50:57 to win the over 70s.

Sarah Fletcher finished in a super-fast 37:58 (3:47 /km) to win the female under 50s. She was 7th overall. Julie Kael ran 50:30 to win the female 50-59s with Anita Scherrer and Kristin Tanner hot on her heals.  Elspeth Nicholls finished the 10 km in 58:51 to win the 60-69s with Clare Wall running an almost unbelievable time of 52.50 to win the over 70s. She would have given the 50-59s a run for their money!

Thanks to Abhinandan Willis who drove up from Melbourne and did a great job of being the on the day race director. Thanks also to our new crew of students who turned up to volunteer making pancakes, pouring drinks and giving out the awards. It was great having you all!

Well done to all the participants who took on the challenge of the race! We look forward to seeing you at our next race which is the Sri Chinmoy Triple-Triathlon on 10 November.

Monday saw our long-held Canberra Day race arrive once again, this time an hour earlier, starting at 7am. This happily coincided with the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, and the dawn sky was filled with colourful bulbous hot air balloons as the race began. Spectators crowded the lake shore and even the lake itself to get a glimpse of these levitating leviathans.

In the 4km event, Kim Wilmshurst had the fastest overall time with 16:50.

The fastest male was Adam Duiationkey (18:37), the only entrant in his under 13 boy's category!

Sarah King won the women's 10km race overall in 39:27.

Daniel Carson in the men's under 50 ran a fast 10km time for this course, in 35:08.

Thanks to all the competitors in the Sri Chinmoy Canberra Day Fun-Runs, and we hope to see you at the first race in our upcoming trail series, the “Cooleman Clip”, on 28 April.

Living in Canberra, we are spoiled. Sometimes it takes a runner visiting from out of town, or from overseas, to remark – “What amazing trails you have here!” or “How I wish we had such a lovely run around the lake in my town!” – to remind us how fortunate we are. Truth be told, the Sri Chinmoy 10km Recreational Running Course could have been located in a dozen different places around 3 alternate lakes: all would draw similar exclamations of wonder and praise.

Next year, 2024 will mark the 40th anniversary of the first public Sri Chinmoy 10km Fun-Run on this Acton course, so a celebration is surely on the cards. Nevertheless, each time we run is a celebration, an offering of gratitude for this simplest expression of wellbeing, happiness and progress – of life.

The stand-out performance today capped a sensational year for Trevor Jacobs, who in winning the 10km M70+ in 49:09, smashed an age group record which had stood for 18 years, and collected his 7th age group record from as many Sri Chinmoy races in 2023! (the Lennox Gardens 5-mile race, today's Acton 10km, and all 5 of the Sri Chinmoy Canberra Trail Series events).

Zac Rosser led the 10km men’s race from the get-go and never looked back, running confidently to win in 34:33, from Andrew Lake’s 35:33 and 3rd placed Daniel Cook in 37:10.

4th and 5th places outright were taken by the first 2 women, with Alexandria Nicholls (37:13) and Rachel Waters (37:41) eating up the hills to run the fastest times on this course in several years, followed by 3rd placed Sarah King in 41:12.

Debra Kay claimed the glory in the Female 50-59 category with 49:14, from Sarah Fien’s 50:57, and Jodi Coppin’s 57:06. In the F60-69, Clare Wall reigned supreme with 54:03, ahead of Liz Simpfendorfer with 55:01 and Manqin Xu in 58:44.

In the Male 50-59, Andrew Carson was swiftest on the day in 41:50, from Andrew Leigh MP’s 42:03, and Andrew Dempster with 42:42. Keith Bennett took out the M60-69 with 50:09, with Peter Simpfendorfer in 55:02 and Chris Lamb in 55:52.

The 4km race was fast (but not furious), with Daniel McIernan gliding to victory from the Male 17+ category in 15:06, ahead of Dominic Torley’s 15:41 (also taking 1st place in the Boys Under 17). Alli Welsford won the female race outright from the Girls Under 13s in 20:49, just edging out Sibylla Muecke’s 20:51, which was fastest of the F17+ category.

Canberra Day held a special significance this morning as the 2023 Australian edition of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run concluded its journey from Brisbane. The Torch was carried on its final leg by a small team, including ACT Peace Run Patron Andrew Leigh, Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury and Federal member for the Canberra seat of Fenner; and long-time Peace Run supporter, ACT Attorney General, Shane Rattenbury. Both Andrew and Shane then joined the field for the 10km run.

Michael Daly showed the field a clean pair of heels in the men’s 10km race, winning in an impressive 33:12, from Daniel Carson’s 34:49 and Kodi Clarkson with 35:03. Aston Duncan set one of the fastest times ever in the Male 50-59 with his fine 37:39, taking this competitive category from Andrew Leigh’s 40:09 and Jeff Grey in 40:12. The closest finish came in the Male 60-69 where Kim Houghton’s 44:47 was just good enough to cover the fine run of 44:49 from Collin Acton; while Peter Badowski took out the Male 70 and Over with 1:02:18.

The women’s race saw a good win from Sarah King, winning in 40:31, with 2nd placed Lili Mooney not far behind in 40:50, from Rebecca Lin with 42:38. Sarah Fien was fastest in the Female 50-59s with an impressive 47:10, from Renee Wolford in 52:23 and Debra Kay with 53:03. Evergreen Clare Wall claimed the Female 60-69 crown with 49:17, from Pam Muston (52:32); while Julie Bell took home the Female 70 and Over award with 1:07:37.

The 4km race saw the largest field ever assembled at this event for this distance.

Daniel Randall was the overall winner from the Boys Under 17 category, in a sizzling 13:50 – a new age group record – ahead of a thrilling sprint finish in the Male 17 and Over, with Xavier Quispes (14:02) edging out Jonathan Fearn (14:03). Ashley Evans was a clear winner in the Boys Under 13 with 18:26.

Kim Wilmshurst was fastest finisher in the women’s race with 17:07; while Alli Westwood took out the Girls Under 13s in 22;21; and Isla Moore the Girls Under 17 with 23:10.

Our gratitude to Robert de Castella for presenting the awards this morning. At the conclusion of the awards presentations, the Peace Run team sang Sri Chinmoy’s Peace Run song, and on behalf of the Peace Run team, Susan Marshall, winner of last year’s Sri Chinmoy 3100 Mile Race (the world’s longest footrace), then presented the Peace Run Torch-Bearer Award to local running legend, Pam Muston. See the Peace Run website for a full report.

The Peace Torch was then symbolically handed to Mick Mudford, representing the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. Mick will now bring the Peace Torch to the Aussie Peace Walk, to be held around Canberra on the weekend of 25 & 26 March.

Perfect weather greeted us at Lake Ginninderra this morning. Blue skies reflected in flat glassy waters, without a breath of wind about. The chilly 2 degrees soon warmed to an agreeable 10-ish degrees, making for excellent running weather. Sure, the grass was a little long at the Bimbi Beach starting line, but that didn't matter once the athletes hit the bitumen path.

The outright winner of the 4km race was the young Alex Fillingham, a feat that was mirrored when his father Kane won the 10km event (36.14).

Laura Ramboer was first woman in the 4km in 17.47, and Georgina Pembroke was first in the 10km in 40.32.

A large contingent of Achilles runners and guides turned out today to support both events.

Congratulations to all competitors at Lake Ginninderra today.

The Sri Chinmoy 10km & 4km Fun-Runs returned to their “home away from home” alongside Lake Ginninderra’s Bimbi Beach for a rejuvenating morning’s outing.

Liam O’Rorke (34:50) had to contend with a strong challenge from James Mason (34:56) to hold onto the main prize in the men’s blue ribbon 10km event, with Andrew Proctor (35:45) coming in 3rd ahead of a fast-finishing Sarankhuu Jargal (35:57), and Kodi Clarkson (36:09) – just 3 days after his 14th birthday. Matt Rizzuto took out the M50-59 with a fine new course record of 36:38; Kim Houghton returned to the winner’s podium in the M60-69 with 47:21; while Greig McEwan led home the M70 and Over in 59:20.

Jordan Anderton won the women’s 10km race in 46:18, from 2nd placed Rowena Woods (46:46), with Yolanda Lovie-Toon completing the podium in 48:42, ahead of Frederike Stock (49:39) and Chloe Hanbury (49:57). Gabrielle Brown won the F50-59 category with 51:01; while Elizabeth Simpson was again a convincing winner in the F60-69 with a commanding 48:54.

Ashley Evans won the 4km race outright from the Boys Under 13 category in 19:14, from Nick Karpetis (1st M17 and Over) with 20:50. Next home was F17 and Over winner, Naomi Block in 21:47, just eclipsing Darcy Byrne who took out the Girls Under 13s with 21:50.

The Sri Chinmoy 10km & 4km Fun-Runs have found a new home for the coming few years while works are underway at Acton Foreshore, with the lovely shaded picnic area overlooking Bimbi Beach at the eastern end of Diddams Close on Lake Ginninderra, proving to be a perfect start/finish location, and the relatively flat lakeside cycle path a scenic and pleasing route, conducive for fast times and the enjoyment of all from the swift of foot to pedestrian plodders. With the course this week being officially measured and certified, all course record times can now be claimed.

Travis Haslam ran a splendidly controlled race to claim the inaugural course record for the Men’s 10km of 33:47, proving too strong for the evergreen Craig Benson (34:32) and Liam Ryan (35:04). Jeff Grey couldn’t hide his class in winning the Male 50-59 by over 5 minutes with 38:51. While Ewan Thompson took out the Male 60-69 in 59:33, perhaps the standout race for the day among the men’s field came from Peter Clarke’s winning effort in the Male 70 and Over with a superb showing of 46:05. Also in the Over 70’s, Jim White completed his 49th Sri Chinmoy 10km or 4km Fun-Run, and his 99th over-all Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team event today, so look out for a celebration upon Jim’s next appearance.

The Women’s 10km competition was taken out by Michelle Cook with a fine 42:04, from 2nd place Bernie Connors (43:59) and 3rd Monique Andrea (44:08). The Female 50-59 saw Bron Adams leading home the category with her splendid 49:21; though the race of the day among the large women’s field was undoubtedly the fantastic run from Elizabeth Simpson to eclipse a strong group in the Female 60-69 with her dominant 47:08. Margaret Finnigan took home the Female 70 and Over prize with her 1:10:48. Congratulations to all!

Xavier Quispes arrived with intent this morning, and proceeded to set a new Course Record (and Boys Under 17 best time in the process) of 14:04 for the 4km out-and-back course following Ginninderra Creek to the north and return. Despite a strong run and taking the record for Males 17 and Over, Kael Hulin could not maintain the same pace as the younger Xavier, following for 2nd overall in 14:26. Alex Fillingham was best among the Boys Under 13 with an excellent showing of 16:37; Jennifer Kellett was fastest among all Females 17 and Over with 20:23; while Darcy Byrne was fastest in the Girls Under 13 category in 25:04.

The Sri Chinmoy measured 10km Recreational Running Course, starting and finishing from the Acton (former) Ferry Terminal, has been the staple venue for Sri Chinmoy Fun-Runs in Canberra since 1984. With construction works taking over the area this month for the ongoing Acton Waterfront development, an alternative course had to be procured for the first time in 36 years.

If this were any other city in the world, finding a stand-in course at short notice might have been a real challenge: in Canberra however, not only were several excellent options readily available – when it was discovered that the public toilet block at the proposed new start location was out of order the day before the race, Canberra’s stacked deck of superb locations and facilities ensured another perfect setting was already waiting in the wings nearby.

Due to the 10km field heading off in waves, and all the women starting first, the men faced an effective 5 minute handicap – providing a fascinating race in itself. The fastest man – Matthew Robbie with a fine 34:21 – still wasn’t able to reel in the floating Katie Porra, whose 38:56 led home the entire field.

Next after Katie in the Female Under 50 was the fabulous Hannah Walmsley with 41:28, followed by an impressive 43:15 from Ainsley Pahljina. Debra Kay was forerunner for the Female 50-59 with her fine 51:16, from Deborah Bremer’s 56:16 and Vanessa Palmer in 1:01:48. It seems the older the women got in this race, the better their performances, as Clare Wall won the Female 60-69 with an outstanding 52:21, from Robyn McClelland’s excellent 57:03 while Rasa Pes – visiting form Sydney – contributed a solid 1:00:15. The run of the day across all categories was unquestionably a fleet-of-foot 54:39 from the phenomenal Susan Archer to win the Female 70 and Over!

Following Matthew home in the men’s race came a steady stream of runners, starting with 2nd placed Miles Waring in 35:01, from Daniel Carson’s 35:28. In the Male 50-59, it was Andrew Tully’s superb 37:27 claiming the largest trophy, from Steve Rohan-Jones’ 38:11 and Matt Hills with 39:30. Another visitor from Sydney seeking the greener racing pastures of Canberra, Ron Schwebel showed wonderful form to take out the Male 60-69 in 44:45 from local cult icon Trevor Jacobs’ 47:44 and Keith Bennett’s 49:48. A record 6 runners filled the Male 70 and Over category, with the legendary Jim White triumphant with 1:00:32, though only barely ahead of Paul Archer’s 1:00:46.

Dave Hardwicke backed up from his outstanding 2nd placing in the recent Sri Chinmoy Canberra Trail 100km, to win this morning’s 4km ‘sprint’ event in an excellent 15:44, ahead of 1st placed Boys Under 17, Ryan Cuzner’s 16:22 and winner of the Boys Under 13, Daniel Randall with 16:43. First female home was Jordynne Rauter with her excellent 17:21, leading home Girls Under 13 winner Lara McClelland with 20:46, and 1st placed Girls Under 17 Hannah Quispes’ 22:04.

Due to the short timeframe to secure this alternate course, the route was not measured to the standard of certification – hence times cannot be recognised as ‘official’ or as course records for this occasion.

Harrison McGill came to Acton to participate in his first Sri Chinmoy 10km Fun-Run, and departed later in the morning having made history. This is a challenging course, renowned for its biting hills. Furthermore, the morning was humid – not conducive to fast times, yet Harrison glided out and back along the lakeside promenade in an astonishing 31:23, nearly 5 minutes clear of 2nd placed Ben Crabb, whose excellent showing of 36:05 would have won this race on many an occasion. Trevor Spencer filled out the podium placings with a solid 36:32.

35 years ago, in 1985 Nick De Castella ran this race in an all-time fastest time of 30:13. In the early 90s the course was re-measured and found to be about 80 metres short, so Nick’s time could no longer be recognised … hence we’re pretty sure Harrison’s time from today is the fastest for the full 10 kilometres Sri Chinmoy Recreational 10km Course.

Jon Schol showed he is in fine nick to take out the Male 50-59 with 44:52; Keith Bennett was best in the Male 60-69 in 49:00; and Graham Burke the Male 70 and Over category with 59:41.

The women’s 10km race saw another class performance from the graceful Elizabeth Humphries to win convincingly with 38:53, from Natalie Archer’s 40:06 and Kristy Zwickert in 42:04. Michelle Morgan took out the Female 50-59 with her fine run of 49:02; while the fabulous Jennifer Kellett barely missed her own race record by a few seconds in winning the Female 60-69 yet again in 49:55.

Xavier Quispes ran a powerhouse solo run to take out the 4km race outright from the Boys Under 17 category in an impressive 14:24, with 2nd outright going to Male 17 and Over winner Chris Cole with 17:08, followed by Boys Under 13 winner Daniel Randall in 17:31.

Hannah Quispes took out the Under 17 Girls with 19:26, while Female 17 and Over winner Georgia Gutierrez was next in 22:31, with Scarlett and Kate Elson first among the Girls Under 13 in 54:11.

Spring in Canberra is the best time of year to be running: mornings are still cool without needing hat and gloves, the sun sparkles, the air refreshes. Everywhere is budding and blooming and one feels the urge to join the party: a morning run is just the ticket. Add a beautiful lakeside setting, the conviviality of fellow runners and a pancake (or two) and the day is shaping up perfectly…

Daniel Carson drew away from Tim O’Shea to take out the men’s 10km race in 35:38 from Tim’s 36:01, with Ben Crabb claiming 3rd with his 36:50 – all excellent times over this challenging course. Steve Richardson was fastest among the Male 50-59 with 44:27, from Kim Houghton’s 45:00 and Jon Schol filling out the podium places in 45:30. David Clarke in the Male 60-69 ran faster than any of his Male 50-59 counterparts, taking the category in a fine 43:17, from Trevor Jacobs in 46:47; while Peter Ralston took out the Male 70 and Over in 55:57.

In the women’s 10km race, Kerry Smith was triumphant with a victory in 43:47, from Lesley Steel with 48:02 and Rowena Woods in 48:17. In the Female 50-59, it was Debra Kay taking the main honours in 50:27, followed by Polly Templeton’s 59:47 and Razz Morgan with 1:01:51. Clare Wall won the Female 60-69 in a fine 50:54 from Liz McLarnen in 1:04:19; while Caroline Campbell won the Female 70 and Over with 1:12:40.

In a welcome and increasing trend, female runners outnumbered the males in the 4km race. Jemma Wilson was fastest of all, winning the race sensationally from the Girls Under 13 category in 17:36, though not far ahead of Nicki Macfarlane racing in the Female 17 and Over with 17:48; with Hannah Quispes taking out the Girls Under 17 in 19:19.

The men’s 4km race was won with style by Kael Hulin (Male 17 and Over) in 14:36, with Xavier Quispes (Boys Under 17) not far adrift in 14:52; while Owen Duncanson was fastest among the Boys Under 13 in 19:04.

Congratulations to all runners and thanks to all volunteers on another splendid morning!

Due to the Sri Chinmoy Multi-Sport Classic being held on the Canberra Day Long Weekend this year, the traditional Canberra Day 10km & 4km Fun-Runs were moved to Sunday 31 March, a less-than-ideal choice as it turned out due to several other significant events also happening about town on this day.

So it was a smaller-than-usual field who gathered on a cooler-than-usual morning with a little less-than-usual excitement and anticipation in the air.

The low-key atmosphere did not deter Jeff Grey however, who had come to the 10km race this morning with a focus and a goal: the 15-year-old Male 50-59 Course Record. Jeff ran the race of the day to convincingly claim the new best time of 39:03, to further consolidate his growing reputation as one of Canberra’s outstanding and best-performing veteran runners of all time.

A few minutes ahead of Jeff, Jonathan Moore had claimed the outright win in the 10km race with a fine 35:51, edging ahead of Aston Duncan (35:58) and Ben Crabb (36:14). Behind Jeff’s record-breaking performance, the race in the Male 50-59 was for the minor placings, with Mark Duncanson taking 2nd in 43:38 from Kim Houghton’s 44:07. Keith Bennett took home the main trophy in the Male 60-69 with 47:25; while Peter Gentry was fastest of the Male 70 and Over brigade in 1:05:10.

The women’s 10km race also proved a tight contest, with Ellie Barrett (42:51) outlasting a challenge from Natty Beck’s 42:59, and Amanda Kennedy taking the final podium placing in 43:40. Debra Kay was fastest of the Female 50-59 in 49:50 from Mayumi Takeuchi’s 54:47 and Sharon Humphreys – who accidentally ran an additional lap around Museum Point – clocking in at 1:00:34.

The top 5 placings in the 4km race this morning were 3 Boys Under 17 and 2 Girls Under 13. Riley Whatman (16:00) was the outright winner, from his brother Angus Whatman (17:31). 3rd overall and 1st Girl Under 13 went to the flying Jemma Wilson in 17:32, followed by the 3rd Boy Under 17, Jayden Alderman in 18:09 and 2nd Girl Under 13, Hannah Quispes with 18:55. Hugh Radford took out the Boys Under 13 in 19:00, followed closely by Flynn Duncan (19:20) and Owen Duncanson (19:35). Melinda Lee won the Girls Under 17 division with 44:37. Among the adults, Severine Bernard took out the Female 17 and Over category in 21:27; and Jose Quispes Garay the Male 17 and Over with 22:32.

Congratulations to all who participated and all who volunteered their services to help make this morning so enjoyable and fulfilling. This race will return to its traditional home of Canberra Day in 2020!

It is rare indeed that a new race record is set on a course which has been used at least twice a year for over 35 years. Yet Jennifer Kellett today did just that – breaking the long-held record for this challenging 10km course of Canberra running legend Caroline Campbell for Female 60-69 – with her wonderful run of 49:47. Congratulations Jennifer!

No-one could possibly have asked for any better conditions this morning alongside the beautiful Lake Burley Griffin for the annual Sri Chinmoy Labour Day gathering of enthusiastic and aspiring runner-enjoyers and pancake-lovers.

Ellie Barrett took out the Female Under 50 10km race with a fine run of 42:28, from Natasha Beck in 43:57 and Skye Cappuccio, whose 45:02 just edged out Julia Ison’s 45:07 for 3rd placing. Kerri Vaughan showed great form to win the Female 50-59, and take 8th outright with 47:34.

Tim Carton was strongest in the men’s race, taking the win in 37:07 from Callum Burns’ 37:21 and David Beaven with 37:37. 6th outright and winning the Male 50-59 was a in-form and unstoppable Jeff Grey with a fine run of 39:29, from Kim Houghton’s 42:53 and Mark Duncanson in 44:09. David Alder took out the competitive Male 60-69 with a scintillating run of 43:07 from Trevor Jacobs’ 45:25; while Graham Burke was too good in the Male 70 and Over in 58:10.

The shorter 4km saw Dave Hardwicke run a superb unchallenged 14:04, the fastest time over this course for a while. Next home in the Male 17 and Over was Iwo Pilecki-Silva with 15:08, just ahead of 1st placed Boy Under 17, Xavier Quispes in 15:15, winning from Riley Whatman in 15:36. Fastest in the Boys Under 13 was Mitchell Osmond in 17:23, from Owen Toyne’s 17:57.

Emily Hill took out the Female 17 and Over and 1st place outright in the women’s 4km race in 16:41, just ahead of 1st placed Girls Under 13, Rebecca Solomon who ran an excellent 16:52, ahead of Mily McCabe’s 17:42 and Jemma Wilson in 17:47; while winner of the Girls Under 17 was Laura Burns with 19:05.

Not many running races start with a spectacular hot-air balloon display over a lake prior to the start; just one of the many treats afforded the runners in the annual Sri Chinmoy Canberra Day Fun-Runs.

A beautiful morning, mild and clear, greeted the small but eager field assembled by Lake Burley Griffin for either a 10km or a 4km hit-out to start their Public Holiday in the best possible fashion.

Alex Hughes not only won the 4km race outright from the Boys Under 17 category: he set a new age group course record of 14 minutes flat in doing so, ahead of Male 17and Over winner Gordon Milne’s 14:27.  The next two home were also from the competitive Boys Under 17s – Xavier Quispes in 15:16 and Rohan O’Grady in 15:22. Boys Under 13 winner was Harry Martin in 17:05.

Emily Hill was a clear winner of the Female 17 and Over in 17:42; while Hannah Quispes won the Girls Under 13 in 22:17.

The 10km run is certainly no stroll in the park, some striking lakeside scenery tempered by a few decent hills heading in both directions on this out-and-back course.

Jason McRae made the best of the morning, returning a 37:37 to win the Male Under 50s from Samuel Lowe’s 38:11 and David Beaven in 38:27. David Clarke took out the Male 50-59 in 41:28; Peter Clarke the Male 60-69 in 44:08; and Peter Gentry the Male 70 and Over category in 1:03:03.

Sally Parker showed good form to win the Female Under 50 race with her 43:39, from Ellie Barrett in 44:27 and Michelle Burns with 46:59. Kelley Horan won the Female 50-59 with 49:44; and Robyn McLelland the Female 60-69 in 59:01.

As the area around the soon-to-be-defunct Acton Ferry Terminal heads into a major redevelopment, we sincerely hope that this event, now in its 35th year, will be able to continue along this lovely course for may years to come.

Today represented a special milestone in the history of Sri Chinmoy races. Forty years ago, to the day, the first ever Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team event was held: a ten-mile race in the hills of Greenwich, Connecticut, USA. Many more races were to follow, with thousands of participants. Not to mention a significant number of races held in Canberra, beginning in the early 80's.

This Labour Day holiday featured the best weather Canberra has to offer – a brisk Spring morning blossoming into a warm, sunny day. The wind that has plagued the region for the last ten days seemed to be taking a holiday too. 160 runners toed the starting line in the 10km and 4km events, having beaten the Floriade multitudes into the Acton Ferry carpark! Veteran runners Rad Leovic and Lachlan Lewis, now both in their 80s, put in a welcome appearance amongst the participants. After our traditional moment of silent reflection, the race was underway.

As is to be expected, the 4km runners were the first home. Thanks to our first foray into chip timing at this event, we could see the runners' names onscreen well before they crossed the finish line. Another innovation meant that finishers could scan their race bibs and see their finish time and position – courtesy of Martin Fryer and FlyerUltra race timing.

The Cuzner family dominated the male divisions, with Ryan in the Under 13s winning the race outright in 15:51. In the adults, Matt won in 18:18. Hannah Cuzner was first in Girls Under 17 (21:26). The Under 17 Boys was won by Rohan O'Grady (15:57, second overall).

The Quispes family featured Xavier and Caleb finishing second and third in the Boys Under 13, whilst Hannah Quispes won the Girls Under 13 (20:57).  The Over 17 Women was won by Kim Wilmshurst (16:36), who was also first to claim her medal before dashing off to work.

The 10km event saw Daniel Carson come home first in the blistering time of 36:41. The first seven men all came in under 40 minutes. For the women, Penny Slater won in 39:33.

Jeff Grey was first in the Male 50-59 division in 41:35. Pam Muston won the Female 50-59 category in 50:41. Legendary mountain runner Trevor Jacobs took the line honours in the Males 60-69 in 45:25.

Peter Gentry won Male 70 and Over division 1:03:37, though was beaten to the finish line by Caroline Campbell, Female 70 and Over in1:00:01.

Congratulations to all the runners, and we hope to see you at our next 10km & 4km Fun-Runs on Canberra Day in March 2018.

It is rare indeed that a course record is set in an event that has been running over 30 years. Admittedly, the present course used for the Sri Chinmoy 10km Fun-Run alongside Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin was re-measured in 2004, when it was found to be a little short, so records set prior to that year are no longer valid. Even so, it’s been 12 years – March 2005 – since the 10km men’s mark last fell.

Today it was Alan Craigie whose sensational 32:25 on this renowned hilly course has set a new benchmark for aspiring Canberra runners to dream of. Alan ran strongly from the start, to win by over 5 minutes from his nearest rivals, Scotty Imhoff – who has himself won this race on many an occasion – in 37:36, and Jason Gossit’s 38:07.

Peter Thomson took out the Male 50-59 in 43:35; the ever-green Jim White the Male 60-69 with 54:10; and the tireless Lachlan Lewis the Male 70 and Over in 1:29:18.

The women’s race was won by an impressive Kym Somi in 41:00, from Katie Slater in 43:48 and Jessica Robson’s 45:49. Pam Muston showed a clean pair of heels to the Female 50-59 field to win in 50:53; Sue Bowden took out the Female 60-69 in 56:38; while the queen of the course today belonged to Caroline Campbell bringing home the Female Over 70 category in a sprightly 59:41.

Christopher Bradley won the 4km race and the Male 17 and Over in 16:00. Second place outright was Ryan Cuzner, taking out the Boys Under 13 from a larger-than-usual field with his 16:13, with Rohan O’Grady not far behind to win the Boys Under 17 in 17:27.

Gemma Ruddick meanwhile was first overall in the Female 17 and Over with her 18:28; with Emma Kennard winning the Girls Under 13 in 20:06.

Early morning rain had given the false impression of a miserable day, discouraging many from venturing out of home on this public holiday Monday. Yet those who ignored the rain and gloom to make the commitment to run regardless, were rewarded with a glorious day of sunshine and smiles, as the photos from today well attest. Our gratitude to Peter Komidar for generously contributing the second half of the photo album for this event.

Congratulations to all the runners who braved the elements this morning at the Sri Chinmoy 10km & 4 km Fun-Runs. The cold, the wind and the rain saw a slimmed-down field take to the Lake Burley Griffin cycle path. Thankfully the rain stopped for (most) of the duration!

Most runners came back muddy and feeling they left it all out there on the course. Many expressed how hard they found the run... which (hopefully) means they had a good race!

Will Brady was the fastest in the 4km with a time of 16:27. Kim Wilmshurst was first female and second finisher overall in 16:39. Race stalwart Spencer Burns was first in his category in 16:51.

In the 10km David Handwicke was first across the line in 37:41, followed by Charles Nicoll in 39:52 and Jeff Grey in 39:57 (first in the mens' 50-59 age category.)

For the women the champion was Michelle Burns in 45:22, followed by Claudia Brown (46:37) and Melissa Oloyede (46:53).

Special mention goes to our Over 70 age group winners; Caroline Campbell (1:04:58), and Graham Burke (54:24).

Unfortunately the race director spent two crucial hours bogged near the race turnaround with the pancake batter on board. By the time he got towed out, the race awards were well underway. The barbeque was set up and cooking in record time, though.

To those who stuck around, thank you for your patience. And to anyone who had to leave before the pancakes, please drop in to My Rainbow-Dreams cafe sometime in Dickson and allow us to treat you to something off our menu, complimentary.

Canberra Day is a festive occasion, a celebration of Canberra’s birthday and all that we love about our home city. One thing we love most is the abundance of opportunities for running and recreation. The bi-annual Sri Chinmoy 10km & 4km Fun-Runs make use of a recreational path alongside Lake Burley Griffin which is geographically in the heart of Canberra, and yet from which, apart from the vista at the start/finish area, one will see scarcely a single building.

Balloons ascended to festoon the sky in anticipation of the start of the race, as though to gain the best viewing spots to observe the contests.

Joshua Torley ran a spirited race from the front in the 10km, recording the fastest time in many a year of 32:11. Craig Benson (33:24) and James Minto (34:52) rounded out the top 3 men. David Clarke took out the Male 50-59 in 40:20; Timothy Horton the Male 60-69 with 51:44; and Peter Gentry the Male 70 and Over with 1:02:32.

Another of the all-star Torley clan – 10-year-old Stephanie –  ran an amazing 40:15 to win the women’s race outright, from Narelle Desmet (42:41) and Michelle Burns (43:42). Elizabeth Bennett was fastest of the Female 50-59 in 48:23; and Jennifer Kellett stood first among the Female 60-69 with 55:46.

The 4km race was marred by a marshalling oversight, which saw a dozen runners missing the turnaround point and running extra distance: 3 boys even proceeded to continue on to complete the full 10km course: their adjusted times are included in the 10km results, though with new numbers. The organisers apologise unreservedly for this mistake: all who ran an extra distance are invited to please participate again with a complimentary entry in the next Sri Chinmoy race at this venue in October.

Ryan Cuzner (Boys Under 13) returned to the finish the fastest in 18:24, just ahead of his dad Matt in 18:28; Callum Burns took out the Boys Under 17 with 21:12. Kim Wilmshurst meanwhile came first in the Female 17 and Over category in 18:40, with Laura Burns (Girls Under 13) not far behind in 18:56; Josephine Dendrinos took out the Girls Under 17 in 23:58.

Congratulations to all who participated on this pleasant, though somewhat humid morning. You are champions all!

It is the way with runners: busy schedules, tiredness, adverse weather, injury – just challenges to increase our determination to get out and run. As water will find a way to flow around any obstacle, so will runners find a way around any roadworks or other obstruction thrown up in their path.

Hence the course for the Sri Chinmoy Labour Day 10km & 4km Fun-Runs – unchanged in over 30 years – this morning found itself for the first time bypassing Hospital Hill to avoid some temporary construction. The route instead wound around the Museum peninsula, to rejoin the “old” course to the west of the hill. An altered turnaround saw the same distances covered, though runners in both races seemed to relish not having to contend with Hospital Hill, especially on the return leg, and posted some faster-than-usual times.

Jessica Pascoe led home the field in the 4km race with an outstanding 14:34, taking out the Female 17 and Over category as well. The men had to be content with 2nd overall, courtesy of Jackson Jones’ 14:48, winning him the Male 17 and Over. Next in was the Boys Under 13 winner, Jacob Davill in 15:00, just pipping the Girls Under 13 winner, Hannah Cadden who came in in 15:03. Theresa Wallner took out the Girls Under 17s in 16:38.

Sean Smee was a class apart in the Men’s 10km race, finishing in an even 34 minutes, 3 minutes ahead of his nearest rival, Ben Grimshaw in 37:07. Kerry Baxter’s 38:43 placed him 6th overall and won the Male 50-59; Graham Burke took out the Men 60-69 in 47:54 and Peter Gentry the Male 70+ with his 1:01:30.

Just as in the men’s race, Aimee Davenport’s winning 39:51 was streets ahead of the field, with Nadine Hunt next in in 43:47. Mary Sietsma took out the Female 50-59 in 54:00; while Caroline Campbell looked ever-fresh in winning the Female 70+ in 58:44.

Piles of pancakes and fruit were eagerly demolished, trophies and medals awarded to generous applause from the good-natured throng, and all went happily into the Public Holiday sunshine.

It is said that the soul comes to the fore on one’s birthday, and Canberra certainly proved that on this Canberra Day.

One of those magical misty mornings over the lake presented a fresh, still day promising pacy running and pancakes aplenty.

Records, they say, are made to be broken, and today was indeed a day destined for such deeds. Carinna Tong’s best time for Females 17 and Over in the 4km race has stood for 10 years, hence it was appropriate that Carinna was on hand today when her time was bettered by 3 seconds by Hannah Walmsley’s 15:50. Hannah was using this race to step out after returning from injury.

Yet even despite breaking this record, Hannah still did not win the race! This honour belonged to an exceptional run from Jordyne Rauter, who lowered the best time for the Girls Under 13 to a new mark of 15:35. There must be few races indeed, where the record for Girls Under 13 is faster than the record for Females 17 and Over!!

Ahead of Jordyne were only two boys competing in the Male 17 and Over category – Connor McCormack (14:15) and Korey Summers (14:17) – and the impressive Jack Wallis who took out the Boys Under 17s in 14:38. First in the Boys Under 13 was Spencer Burns in 15:42.

Not content for the short-distance youngsters to take all the records, Caroline Campbell – one of the most loyal stalwarts and a quiet heroine of the Canberra running scene – shattered the best time in the 10km race for the Women 70 and Over category with her outstanding 58:21. Incidentally, Caroline still holds the record for the Women 60-69, set 6 years ago to the day.

Representing the Women 60-69 today was Robyn McLelland, who ran a fine 57:19. Elizabeth Bennett took out the Women 50-59 with her 46:52; while the open women’s race was won by Kelly-Ann Varey with an impressive 39:53.

Luke Schofield had meanwhile taken out the men’s race in 36:15; with Kim Houghton a happy winner of the Men 50-59 in 43:22 (just edging out David Clarke’s 43:26); Tony Cummings won the Men 60-69 in 50:21; and Alan Wilson the Men 70 and Over in 54:32.

The event photo album offers a good record of the personal struggles and joys of this memorable Canberra Day morning.
